my books

Our receptionist stopped by my office today to ask me if I wasn't using any of my books on my bookshelf.

One, they are MY books, so it's really none of her business.

Two, if I'd said yes, so what; my bookshelves are mostly empty, and we have no shortage of office equipment, only people, so it's not like she needed one of my bookshelves.

Who knows, I tried to ask her the proper leading question to get to what it was she really wanted, but she went into snippy bitch-mode, and repeated her original question instead of expanding on her need.

Am I the only person who understands that "what" usually means "please expand on your original statement" NOT "please repeat the statement that left me befuddled the first time, louder, cause that will help understanding"?
