The problem with religions based on shame is that you grow up believing that everything happens for a reason, and the reason is usually something you did 'wrong'. In the real world, some things just happen for no good reason at all, but you grow up catholic, or baptist, and you assume you did something to piss 'someone' off, every time you ice cream cone gets knocked to the ground by a stray gust of wind.
